Frequently
Asked Questions

We know that adopting, rehoming, or caring for a pet can bring up lots of questions. This FAQ page is designed to give you quick answers about the Sitka Animal Control Shelter and the role Friends of Sitka Animal Shelter plays in supporting it.

If you don’t see your question answered below, please email us at sitkaanimalfriends@gmail.com, we’re always happy to hear from you!

What is the difference between Friends of Sitka Animal Shelter and Sitka Animal Control?

Animal Control is operated by the City and Borough of Sitka and manages shelter operations, animal intake, and enforcement. Friends of Sitka Animal Shelter is a separate non-profit entity that provides financial, volunteer, and community support.

How do I adopt a pet?

Check our website and social media for available pets. If you are interested in adopting, please contact the Sitka Animal Control Shelter at 907-966-5768 to set up an appointment. If it seems like a good fit, you can fill out an application to adopt.

How can I volunteer?

The Sitka Animal Control Shelter is always looking for volunteers to help with cleaning, dog walking and cat socialization. To join the volunteer team, please download a volunteer application. Once complete, please email it to sitkaanimalfriends@gmail.com or drop it off at the Sitka Animal Control Shelter. We will review your application as soon as possible and get back to you with next steps.

If you are interested in getting involved but would prefer to help with behind the scenes work like event support and fundraising, please contact us at sitkaanimalfriends@gmail.com.

I need to rehome my pet, what should I do?

If you need to rehome your pet, please create a profile with photos and a description on our rehoming platform: https://home-home.org/shelters/sitkaanimalfriends

The more information you can include the better! Once your profile is complete, we will publish your pet and start spreading the word. Your information will be kept private and people will be able to message you directly through the rehoming platform, so be sure to check your email!

Do you provide financial help for veterinary care?

Yes, Friends of Sitka Animal Shelter offers a Compassionate Care Fund to help low-income families with veterinary expenses. You can access the application by clicking HERE.

Before submitting an application, please request a cost estimate from your veterinarian. Having this information will help us process your request more quickly. If you have any questions, please email compassionatecaresitka@gmail.com.

I have items to donate, what should I do?

If you have items to donate such as food, litter, blankets/towels or other supplies, please place them in the brown bin outside the Sitka Animal Control Shelter. Thank you!
